20 Year 5 pupils from Bristol’s Summerhill Academy will be dancing their way through the renowned St Pauls Carnival when it returns to the city on July 1.

Summerhill Academy had always had a presence at the St Pauls Carnival – until the pandemic struck and forced the event’s cancellation. Now, with the carnival returned after its enforced three-year hiatus, the pupils are back and raring to go.

The Summerhill youngsters have alongside with expert international costume designers who have previously been part of carnivals in Brazil, the Caribbean and Venice.

The day will be a fusion of carnival culture and heritage, complete with all the favourites people know and love: music, costumes, food, musicians, dancers and much, much more will be on show.

Summerhill’s pupils will join the main procession as it spends 90 minutes touring the city. Tens of thousands of spectators are expected to line the streets to enjoy the parade and revel in the magical carnival atmosphere.

Year 5 class teacher at Summerhill Academy, Luke Wilson-Read, said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for the children of Year 5 to celebrate culture and feel connected to our wider community. All staff at Summerhill Academy feel very proud that our pupils are taking part in this huge multi-cultural event.”
