News, events and schools' information for families across Bristol

FUTURES2021, a free festival of discovery with events for all the family, returns to Bristol and the South West on 24 and 25 September 2021.

FUTURES2021 is a collaboration between Universities of Bristol, Bath, Exeter, Plymouth and Bath Spa University as part of European Researchers’ Night. This Europe-wide event, funded by the European Commission, aims to bring research to life and to promote careers in research to young people and their families.

The South West is a hub for outstanding EU research and innovation and at FUTURES2021 a series of in person and online events will show how research is making our daily lives better.

Researchers from the University of Bath will also be in Bristol at Brunel’s S.S. Great Britain where, for one night only, you can meet scientists, engineers, and historians on the grounds of this historic ship and have a go at a range of hands-on activities.

Also at the S.S. Great Britain will be a programme of Discovery Talks throughout the two days where researchers from the University of Bristol will share the latest innovations and discoveries being made across arts, humanities, science, and engineering at the University of Bristol. Check out www.futuresnight.co.uk for the full programme.

There’s also an opportunity to explore the city of Bath with a digital, self-guided, time travelling, walking tour developed with local theatre company Kilter. Test Tubes and Time Travel will lead you to discover some of the buildings and locations that have shaped modern science. Along the way you’ll also encounter researchers ‘popping-up’ from the University of Bath as you explore and some interactive surprises – this will show Bath in a whole new light.

Or if you fancy an evening with a difference where laughter mixes with some science know-how, Science Show-Off presents Never Explain, a comedy panel show stand-up with a difference.

Online events will also be taking place throughout the weekend and beyond so there is something for everyone, whether you want to pit your wits against researchers in the Big Family Quiz  or explore  ‘Do Try This At Home’, where ready-to-use resources will enable children to engage with research and express their curiosity.

All the events are completely free but you will need tickets.  You can find out more and get your tickets at www.futuresnight.co.uk.
