Students at Redland Green School (RGS) receive ‘a good-quality of education’ through an ambitious and inclusive curriculum, with teachers having ‘high expectations of the quality of work that they expect students to produce’, according to education watchdog Ofsted during an inspection last December.

The school was judged to be ‘Good’ in all areas, with ‘Outstanding’ for its Sixth Form provision – an overwhelmingly positive report which crucially mirrors the school’s own self-evaluation.

Lead inspector Kelly Olive writes in her report, ‘The school has high expectations of pupils’ behaviour. Lessons are calm and purposeful. Relationships among pupils and staff reflect a positive and respectful culture. Pupils are safe and they feel safe.’

It was also noted that RGS is ‘an inclusive and respectful environment where difference is celebrated.’

The leadership team at RGS were also praised for its strengths. ‘Leaders know the school well. They initiate changes and improvements effectively.’

Furthermore, staff shared their positive experiences relating to professional development opportunities and appreciation for the ‘enrichment time’ which supports their wellbeing.

With regards to special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the Ofsted report acknowledged that it identified pupils quickly, and that ‘appropriate support, which is reviewed regularly, is then put into place.’

As with all Ofsted reports, an area of improvement in some subject areas was highlighted which is already part of the school’s Improvement Plan, thanks to RGS’s internal scrutiny and evaluation.

Ben Houghton, Headteacher

Ben Houghton, Headteacher at RGS, said, “I would like to thank all staff who work tremendously hard at ensuring we strive to improve and provide the best possible education for all in our care. Thank you also to our parents who continue to support us, and finally thank you to our wonderful students who are a constant source of inspiration as they live the school values of Respect – Ambition – Responsibility.”

Nicky Edmondson, CEO of Excalibur Academies Trust, added, “We are delighted with Redland Green’s Ofsted report which quite rightly praises the school’s culture, ethos, curriculum, leadership and enrichment programme. The hard work being put in by Ben and his team behind the scenes is evident to see.”
