News, events and schools' information for families across Bristol

Bristol’s Storytale Festival is back! The festival is organised by a small group of Bristol parents and celebrates stories for children, showcasing local authors, illustrators and storytellers with a range of interactive, accessible and fun events for various ages.

Chapter 3 of Storytale remains a free bitesize, online-only event with the festival taking place on Facebook on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 October with five live events.

Will Hamilton-Davies will be getting kids drawing and dancing with the Shrew with the Flu; discover the world of plants with Lauren Tobia and Oscar’s Tower of Flowers; Alex Morss will encourage creativity while sharing some of her favourite animals from Funny Bums, Freaky Beaks; and there will be an extra special storytelling session with Pridie Tiernan who will bring the natural world to life with The Nettle Princess

Ever dreamed about writing a children’s book? Middle grade authors Anna Hoghton, Sophie Kirtley and Emma Read will be offering advice about writing for children. There will be a chance to ask them questions as they share stories of their own road to publication. Plus Literature Works will be offering two free advice surgeries in conjunction with this event.

“We first launched this festival in 2019 with 43 events across the city,” explained co-director Ellie Freeman. “Since then we’ve had to adapt and go online. We’re hoping we can bring the festival to children across the city in-person next year, with fun, diverse, accessible and interactive events that will give them the chance to meet authors, illustrators and storytellers from Bristol. Our aim is to showcase local talent and provide a festival that has something for all ages.”
