Wells Cathedral School is delighted to announce it has won Independent School of the Year 2020 in the Performing Arts category. The award seeks to highlight the exceptional opportunities that pupils experience in the Performing Arts at Wells, with praise for its elite and general programmes being noted by the judges’ panel.

“The Drama Department provides a hugely rich, varied and inspiring programme of theatre trips and visiting professional workshops,” said Damian Todres, Director of Drama and Theatre Studies. “Its Trinity Speech and Drama programme continues to flourish, with all pupils receiving a merit or distinction in the most recent examinations. There are dance companies which perform in national competitions, with the opportunity to receive further Dance tuition in all styles.

“As well as a newly refurbished drama studio, teaching space, brand new dance studio, many music rooms and recording studios, productions and concerts are often performed in Cedars Hall, our state-of-the-art performing arts venue. Last year we took a riotous production of Grease to Strode Theatre, playing to 2,000 members of the general public with each show ending in a standing ovation and dancing in the aisles!

“Ambitious and inventive, the Drama Deptment has reframed the recent lockdown into an opportunity to work in a different way, and we are currently working on a filmed production project of Timberlake Wertenbaker’s play Our Country’s Good, a work celebrating the transformative power of theatre; never more timely or apt.”
