Clifton College was thrilled to host the inaugural Young City Poet competition at the end of March, organised by LYRA Bristol Poetry Festival.
The event involved workshops available to secondary schools and community groups based anywhere in Bristol, aimed at young people aged 14-17 (school years 10-12).
LYRA believes poetry is something for everyone to enjoy and participate in. It aims to engage young people with self-expression, public speaking and self-empowerment through the medium of spoken word and poetry, inviting participants to write about what Bristol means to them – its people, places, history and more.
The Young City Poet project is connected to the Bristol 650 celebrations, marking the 650th anniversary of Bristol becoming an independent county (and city).
“Well done to each and every individual who performed their poem, we were blown away by the talent we saw!” Ms Walker, Head Librarian at Clifton College.
“The college also extends a big thank you to Caleb Parkin (Bristol City Poet 2020-2022), and Vanessa Kisuule (Bristol City Poet 2018-20), for inspiring all the budding poets through editing and performance workshops.”
