QEH school in Bristol has been marking Pride Month in a number of ways, both in the classroom and throughout the school community.
One of the most visible ways is by flying the Pride flag at the school. The flag is a symbol of the school’s commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
In addition to flying the Pride flag, QEH has also held several year group assemblies to discuss the meaning and history of Pride. These assemblies have been an opportunity for students to learn about the history of the LGBTQ+ movement, and the importance of celebrating Pride.
Tutor time sessions have also been used to discuss Pride. These sessions have been an opportunity to discuss topics including rainbow washing and the sincerity with which Pride is celebrated in the corporate world.
Mr. Moore, head of Allies, took several pupils to a cinema screening of the film Love, Simon which tells the story of a gay teenager who comes to terms with his sexuality. The screening was an opportunity for students to see a positive representation of LGBTQ+ people on screen and to discuss the themes of the film.
Allies and pupils from across the year groups, supported by the Art department, designed a colourful chalk mural in the Yard. QEH staff were also encouraged to add to the mural in break times.
Finally, a cake sale was held in support of AKT which raised £240. AKT is a charity that provides support to LGBTQ+ young people who are facing or experiencing homelessness or living in a hostile environment. The cake sale was an opportunity for students to raise money for a good cause, and to show their support for the LGBTQ+ community.
