Whether you fancy giving longboarding a go or just watching others do their impressive thing, head to Millennium Square at 4pm on July 22, for a gathering of like-minded women, girls and non-binary longboard skaters.
Danielle and Georgia, who founded the group during lockdown, are inviting anyone with an interest in longboarding to go along and find out more about the activity with a view to inspiring even more people to give it a go. “Whether you have a board or not, come down,” Danielle suggests. “Beginners or seasoned-boarders, anyone is welcome. Just bring along some knee, elbow and wrist protection and a helmet and the Bristol Girls Longboard crew will be on hand to give you a few tips to get you going.”
Moving to Bristol during 2020’s lockdowns, Georgia and Danielle, who knew each other from London, took to their longboards as a fun outdoor activity that kept them physically and mentally healthy. “Inspired by Longboard Girls Group, we wanted to build our own crew in the city,” Danielle explained. “And within two sessions, we had 15 girls joining us. It’s carried on growing from there!”
Bristol has long been known as a place where people can be themselves and take on adventures, which makes it the perfect place for a group like this to grow. “Everyone in the city is trying to make a difference, to be part of changing the world,” Danielle says. “Bristol girls are fearless! And, we’ve had so much support from guys and girls alike, as well as local independent longboarding stores, to increase the number of girls longboarding across the city.”
And her favourite Bristol longboarding spots? “That depends on your style,” Danielle responds. “For dancing, join the roller-skaters enjoying the music at Millennium Square. Ashton Court is best for sliding (fast downhills), Trenchard Street Car Park which has great city views is ideal for downhill runs, while The Wave’s 1km path from the car park to the surf centre is perfect for beginners: smooth, long and great for practising cruising. Plus the sunsets up there are beautiful.”
