The Downs Preparatory School in Bristol has announced the addition of its new on-site covered 20m swimming pool.

The covered swimming pool represents an investment of over £500k and is set to revolutionise the way the school’s students engage with aquatic activities. This state-of-the-art facility boasts an array of features designed to ensure optimal comfort, safety, and sustainability.

Key features of the covered swimming pool:

  • Year-round usage The central focus of the project is a retractable cover that envelops the pool area, allowing for year-round utilisation regardless of weather conditions. During the summer months, the bottom two segments of the enclosure can fold up into the roof space, allowing for an open-air experience. In contrast, during winter, the fully enclosed structure ensures a warm and inviting environment.
  • Integrated changing rooms The pool’s in-built changing rooms streamline the swimming experience, ensuring convenience for the students.
  • Fully inclusive The facility has undergone enhancements to its pathways, now offering disabled access for individuals of all abilities. Furthermore, dedicated changing and toilet facilities have been incorporated to ensure a fully inclusive experience.
  • Modernisation and sustainability The refurbishment includes an overhaul of the pool surroundings, machinery and pipework. Notably, air source heat pumps have been installed to harness sustainable energy sources for the pool water heating. This commitment to eco-friendly practices aligns seamlessly with the school’s commitment to sustainability.
  • Wider community Beyond the student body, this facility extends its reach to the wider community. Opportunities for external partnerships and pool rental will be available, sharing the benefits of this new resource.

“The covered swimming pool is testament to our dedication to provide our students with space for growth and exploration all within our expansive site,” said Headteacher, Debbie Isaachsen. “It’s not just about having year-round access to swimming; it’s about developing life skills, instilling a life-long love of sport, and embracing sustainability.

“We’re excited for the opportunities it will provide for not only our students and staff but also for the wider community.”
