A family lunch out in the middle of Bristol with some of the best burgers in town

You can’t beat a really good burger and we think that we might have found some of the very best that Bristol has to offer.

We were out and about enjoying a family wander, including the most excellent St Nicholas Market and Air Raid Shelter Tour, and lunch beckoned. Following the advice of Duncan, the tour leader, we headed out along to Welsh Back and the fabulous Three Brothers Burgers, a quirky, friendly and very inviting restaurant specialising in burgers and offering a pretty fantastic choice to feast on.

Being lunchtime, Three Brothers Burgers was pretty busy but the super friendly team found room for the four of us and handed out the menus. Alongside the 11 burgers on the main menu, there was a choice of specials and a fair few sides and extras too. While we made our choices, drinks were ordered, with a couple of pints of Keller Pils (£6 each) for the oldies, and one chocolate and one Biscoff shake (£4 each) for the children.

By the times the drinks turned up we were ready with our orders – one Classic Burgers (£7.50), a Bacon Cheeseburger (£10.50), a Chilli Burger with crispy onions, jalapenos and American cheese (£13.50) and, from the specials boards, an El Matador with aged beef patty, oak smoked chorizo, rocket, manchego, salmorejo, aioli and mojo verde (£13).

Now of course, dining with children means at least a few changes to orders, with no cheese on this one, extra do-dah on that one – you know how it goes. The waiting team couldn’t have been happier to deal with it all, explaining that they see it all of the time.

Each of the burgers comes with fries, plus there’s a £7.50 lunch deal Monday-Friday 12-5pm, for a Classic Burger, fries and coleslaw.

The vibe at Three Brothers Burgers is laid back and calm, just the thing for a family to chill out and chat about how much we love Bristol. Plus, this whole experience was just so much better than other burger places that rate speed and low cost over quality and service.

When the burgers arrived, they looked amazing and tasted pretty good too. My El Matador was quite simply fantastic – the best burger I’ve tasted for a very long time. With a big, thick and very juicy burger perfectly complemented by the chorizo, salad and sauces, it was gorgeous.

Next to me, my older son clearly loved his too, wolfing it down in a way that only an unquenchable teenage appetite can manage. Only, my wife and younger son weren’t quite as effusive, but they still appeared pretty happy.

Of yes, and the Pils was excellent too – just the thing for a muggy Saturday lazy around – while all that was left of the milkshakes were milky tidemarks around the inside of the glass.

Our only criticism came with the fries – just a little too over-done for our liking, although to fair, still absolutely edible and clearly popular with the other diner.

Now OK, we haven’t by any means visited every burger place in Bristol, but we were so impressed with our lunch at Three Brothers Burgers, we will be surprised to find a better burger bar in the city. Our top tip for your visit? Check out the specials and if the El Matador is there, give it a go.
