A Year 13 pupil at Clifton College has been awarded a Morehead-Cain Scholarship that will fully fund her educational experience at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Izzy, who is planning to major in Psychology, entered the highly competitive selection process with more than 2,000 applicants to secure a place.

Morehead-Cain Scholarships are awarded to applicants that demonstrate the following key criteria: leadership, character, scholarship and physical vigour. Notable alumni include Pulitzer Prize winning journalists and authors, members of the US Congress, diplomats and directors of research institutions and global businesses.

James Dean, Vice-Chairman, British Morehead-Cain Scholarship Programme, said, “The Morehead-Cain Scholarship to UNC-Chapel Hill in North Carolina is one of the most prestigious scholarships in the world. It was established in 1945, and British students were introduced in 1969.

“Until Izzy was awarded it this year, there have been three other scholars from Clifton College, so we are so delighted that Izzy is continuing that legacy. The scholarship is looking for undergraduate leaders who are not only going to make their mark on campus at UNC, but also go out into the wider world and have a real impact throughout their lives.

“Izzy’s achievements at Clifton have clearly shown the Morehead-Cain Foundation that she has that potential and we can’t wait to see what she does with her four years at the university. The scholarship not only pays for all tuition and board, but also pays for four distinct summer experiences all over the world.

“It’s a very exciting prospect for us and we’re so proud of Izzy for being awarded the scholarship, and we definitely hope to see other candidates from Clifton in the coming years.”

Dr Tim Greene, Head of College, added, “Winning a Morehead-Cain Scholarship is an immense achievement and we could not be more proud of Izzy. It involves a hugely demanding selection process but Izzy’s wide-ranging abilities and strength of character clearly shone through. I have no doubt she will make the most of this wonderful opportunity in the years to come.”
