Children from The Meadows Primary School in Bristol recently enjoyed a visit from Captain George who spoke to the school about his experiences as a World War One soldier.
Captain George visited the whole school as part of an assembly, giving the children the chance to find out more about WWI and WWII. He spoke about the different roles men and women played in the wars, including that he was a medic soldier, who helped if others were injured. He showed them different items of equipment that were worn during the war, including a rifle, gas mask, lunch pack and a trusty mug for a cup of tea!
The visit was followed by Year 5 and 6 pupils paying a Remembrance Day trip to a local church to observe two minutes silence and hear last post. They will visit the grave of the unnamed soldier and will lay a cross with the names of every soldier from Bitton who died during WWI and WWII.
“We really value visitors coming in to enhance learning opportunities for children,” said Headteacher Joy Mounter. “Captain George helped them to understand the meaning of Remembrance Day and made them curious to find out more. We are always looking to give the children the best experiences to encourage curiosity and big dreams.”
