For the second consecutive year, Fairfield High School (FHS) has been nominated as a Music Mark School. It was awarded this status in celebration of its excellent and high-quality music education plus commitment to music in the school and community.
FHS has built a long-standing relationship with Bristol Plays Music (now called Bristol Beacon) over the past seven years, including being involved with the development of a ‘Bristol Music Curriculum’ which has been rolled out in partnership with the organisation. This has led to a more representative and diverse Bristol-focused curriculum being offered to students across the city, and is something that the school continues to develop in its constantly evolving curriculum.
Tim Roderick, Head of Music at Fairfield High School explains further the work required to be recognised in this way.
“We are really thrilled and proud to be recognised as a forward-thinking and outward-looking music department again this year. This means a lot to us. This year we intend to continue engaging with Bristol Beacon to look at our programme of study.
“This will ensure we deliver our students the very best curriculum, in line with OFSTED and DofE guidance, providing students with opportunities to engage with music making in the community and at Post-16 level when leaving Fairfield. We also plan to resurrect the successful FHS choir.”
Fairfield continues to offer those students wishing to pursue individual instruments a wide array of choices, including singing, piano, guitar, drums, woodwind, violin and brass. In addition, students have the opportunity to study music production, song-writing and beat-making, giving further support to the Post-16 opportunities and pathways they may wish to choose.
FHS looks forward to continuing to build upon this important educational and creative journey, and supporting its students with these and other opportunities to engage with music-making both within, and outside of school in the wider community.
