News, events and schools' information for families across Bristol

Pupils from form 2, 3 and 4 from Cleve House International School and Pre-school in Knowle, Bristol recently enjoyed a day out to visit the Roman museum and ruins at Caerleon in Wales.

“We started the day by defeating the pesky Celts in an epic battle before heading over to see the various ruins of the old barracks (we even got chance to ‘try out’ the latrines!),” said teacher, Dan Burnell.

“After looking at the many artefacts in the fascinating museum, we were greeted by a REAL Roman lady who told us all about life in Roman Britain – we heard all about the Saturnalia festival that she and her family were about to celebrate, and she was fascinated to hear how similar it was to our Christmas festivities. She also loved learning about all the things we have in 2023 that she’d never heard of – TVs, cars and even chocolate!

“We all agreed that it was the ‘best school trip ever’ and are looking forward to using the knowledge we picked up in our topic work back at school.

“The children were engaged from start to finish with this excellent site in Wales which is only just over half an hour from Bristol. It really brings to life the history they learn about in the classroom and it was a joy to see them running around the amphitheatre with their own shields, or to see their astonished faces when they tried to lift up a chainmail shirt in the mock-up of the barrack rooms that Roman soldiers would have slept in.”
